    Discover more about BioDesign Studio

BioDesign Studio, located inside The Tech Interactive in the heart of downtown San Jose, offers a fascinating glimpse into the burgeoning fields of synthetic biology, bioengineering, and biological design. This unique exhibit space is designed to demystify complex scientific concepts and empower visitors of all ages to explore, tinker, and create with the building blocks of life. Upon entering the BioDesign Studio, visitors are immediately immersed in a world where biology is not just a subject to be studied, but a technology to be explored and manipulated. The studio is divided into several interactive stations, each offering a different perspective on the power and potential of biological systems. One of the highlights is the BioTinkering Lab, the nation's first community biotinkering space within a museum. Here, visitors can participate in hands-on activities, such as creating mushroom bricks from recycled wood particles and mycelium, transforming waste into sustainable building materials. Another popular station is the Living Colors Lab, where projection mapping guides visitors through a real-world lab experiment. Participants mix DNA into bacteria to create new glowing colors, with the results visualized in real-time on a wall of 1,493 LED petri dishes. This exhibit not only teaches the fundamentals of genetic engineering but also allows visitors to witness the tangible results of their experiments. The Creature Creation Station offers a digital twist on biological design. Visitors use computerized blocks to build new virtual lifeforms by snapping together physicalized pieces of DNA. Sensors in the magnetic DNA blocks sync with screens, providing real-time feedback on the genetic design in progress. Once created, these virtual creatures are released into a digital world to interact with other beings, showcasing the potential for creating novel biological systems. In the Pattern Design exhibition, visitors take control of the rules behind nature's emergent systems to design new coat patterns on life-size animal sculptures. This exhibit demonstrates how simple rules can lead to complex and beautiful patterns in nature, and how these rules can be manipulated to create new designs. The BioDesign Studio is not just about learning; it's about inspiring the next generation of biotech innovators. By providing a space where visitors can play, experiment, and create with biology, the studio aims to foster a sense of curiosity and empower individuals to use synthetic biology to solve pressing global challenges, such as food security and climate change. The Tech Interactive, where the BioDesign Studio is housed, is a landmark in Silicon Valley, designed by Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta. The museum itself is dedicated to engaging people of all ages in exploring and experiencing applied technologies affecting their lives. With hands-on activities, experimental labs, and design challenge experiences, The Tech Interactive empowers people to innovate with creativity, curiosity, and compassion. Visiting the BioDesign Studio is an opportunity to witness the intersection of art and science, and to gain a deeper appreciation for the potential of biotechnology to transform our world. Whether you're a student, a scientist, or simply curious about the future, the BioDesign Studio offers a unique and inspiring experience that will leave you with a renewed sense of wonder and possibility. The BioDesign Studio is more than just an exhibit; it's a "bio-sandbox" for experimentation and exploration of a new and unfamiliar medium. It's a place where visitors can get their hands on a novel set of tools for exploring synthetic biology, and where the lines between physical and digital are blurred to create collaborative, multi-sensory experiences that can't be replicated elsewhere. Located in downtown San Jose, The Tech Interactive is easily accessible by public transportation, car, and bike. The museum offers parking validation at nearby garages, and is conveniently located next to VTA stops for both the light rail and the bus. With its central location and engaging exhibits, The Tech Interactive and the BioDesign Studio are must-see destinations for anyone visiting Silicon Valley.
