Discover more about Monopoly in the Park

Monopoly in the Park offers a unique and playful experience in the heart of downtown San Jose. Nestled within Discovery Meadow, part of the Guadalupe River Park, this attraction brings the classic board game to life on a grand scale. Certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's largest permanent Monopoly board, it's a must-see for board game enthusiasts and families alike. The history of Monopoly itself is fascinating. Originally created in 1903 by Lizzie Magie as "The Landlord's Game," it was designed to illustrate the economic consequences of monopolies. However, it was Charles Darrow who popularized the game during the Great Depression, eventually selling the rights to Parker Brothers. The version we know today features properties named after locations in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Monopoly in the Park takes this concept a step further by incorporating local flavor into some of the property squares, such as "Santa Cruz Boardwalk" and a humorous nod to the "County of Santa Clara Department of Corrections" for the Jail space. The giant Monopoly board spans an impressive 930 square feet and is constructed from durable granite slabs. Each corner property slab weighs approximately 236 pounds, while the regular property slabs weigh around 140 pounds, giving visitors a sense of being miniaturized as they explore the board. The attraction was originally created in 1992 by Cypress Granite and Memorials for the San Francisco Landscape and Design Show. San Jose Beautiful then acquired it and, after a decade-long wait, officially installed it in Discovery Meadow on July 26, 2002. While visiting Monopoly in the Park is free and open to the public during park hours, the real fun begins when you rent the board for an interactive game experience. Imagine rolling oversized dice and donning gigantic token-shaped hats as you navigate the larger-than-life properties. The rental includes jumbo dice, token hats, and even jailhouse garb for those unlucky enough to land on the "Go to Jail" space. Renting the board is ideal for family events, corporate team-building activities, school field trips, and children's parties. The experience is managed by Friends of San Jose, with proceeds supporting park improvements, neighborhood enhancements, landscaping projects, and children's environmental education programs. Beyond the Monopoly board itself, Discovery Meadow offers a pleasant green space for relaxation and recreation. The park is conveniently located next to the Children's Discovery Museum, making it easy to combine visits for a full day of family fun. Other nearby attractions include the Rotary PlayGarden, Guadalupe River trails, The Tech Interactive, and History Park, providing ample opportunities for exploration and entertainment. Whether you're a serious Monopoly player or simply seeking a unique photo opportunity, Monopoly in the Park offers a memorable experience that captures the playful spirit of this beloved board game. It's a testament to the enduring appeal of Monopoly and a celebration of community in the heart of Silicon Valley.
