Walking
From most hotels or shops in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea, Carmel Beach is easily accessible on foot. Simply head west on Ocean Avenue towards the ocean. The walk is generally downhill and takes about 15-20 minutes. Ocean Avenue leads directly to the main parking lot and beach access point. Alternatively, access the Scenic Pathway from 8th Avenue and walk along the bluff, using the stairways to reach the beach. Note that the stairways at 10th and 12th Avenue are currently closed (May 2025).
Driving
If driving from elsewhere in Carmel or the surrounding area, navigate towards Ocean Avenue. A parking lot is available at the foot of Ocean Avenue, but it fills up quickly, especially during peak season. Additional parking can be found along Scenic Road and San Antonio Avenue. Parking is free, but time limits may apply on some streets. Be aware of the 7.5 feet height and 20 feet length restrictions on Scenic Road. From the parking areas, access the beach via the sand ramp at the end of Ocean Avenue or the stairways along Scenic Road.
Public Transport
Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) provides bus service to Carmel-by-the-Sea. From Monterey, take MST Line 4 or 5 to Carmel Rancho Boulevard / Carmel Rancho Center, then transfer to Line 7 or 8 towards downtown Carmel. Get off near Ocean Avenue and walk west towards the beach. A single ride on MST costs $2.50. Alternatively, from Seaside, take Line 20 to Monterey Transit Plaza, then transfer to Line 5 to Carmel Rancho Blvd / Carmel Rancho Center, and finally Line 7 or 8 towards downtown Carmel. The total cost would be around $7.50.
Taxi/Ride-Share
Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are readily available in Carmel and the surrounding areas. A ride from downtown Carmel to Carmel Beach is a short trip, typically costing between $8 and $15, depending on demand and traffic.
