Discover more about Lone Cypress

Perched dramatically on a granite headland overlooking the Carmel Bay, the Lone Cypress is an enduring symbol of the Monterey Peninsula. This solitary Monterey cypress, estimated to have sprouted around 1750, has become one of the most iconic landmarks on the California coast, drawing over 1.5 million visitors annually. Its image is synonymous with Pebble Beach, representing the rugged beauty and resilience of the natural world. Standing strong against the elements for centuries, the Lone Cypress has weathered countless storms, fires, and even vandalism attempts. Cables have supported the tree since 1940s, a testament to the efforts to preserve this natural wonder. The tree's tenacity has made it a symbol of perseverance, inspiring artists, photographers, and nature lovers alike. The Monterey cypress species itself is rare, native to only two locations worldwide: the area between Fanshell Beach and Pescadero Point in Pebble Beach, and across Carmel Bay at Point Lobos. The Lone Cypress is surrounded by its brethren, showcasing the unique ecosystem of this coastal region. The historically inactive Fanshell Beach Fault seems to create a distinct visual divide between nearby Cypress Point to the south, and Spyglass Hill to the north. Visitors to the Lone Cypress can experience the breathtaking beauty of the 17-Mile Drive, a scenic road that winds along the coast and through the Del Monte Forest. The drive offers stunning views of rugged coastline, picturesque beaches, and luxurious mansions. The Lone Cypress is one of the 17 stops along the drive. There is ample parking at the viewpoints, especially at this one for the lone cypress. Some picnic areas are available as well as places to walk along the beaches here. While the Lone Cypress is the star attraction, the 17-Mile Drive offers a wealth of other natural and man-made wonders. These include: * **Spanish Bay:** Known for its inviting snow-white dunes and beaches. * **Point Joe:** Where you can witness the power of the Restless Sea. * **Bird Rock:** Home to a variety of seabirds and marine mammals. * **Fanshell Beach:** A seasonal haven for harbor seals and their pups (typically April to June). * **Crocker Grove:** Featuring a collection of impressive Monterey pines. * **Pebble Beach Golf Links:** A world-renowned golf course with stunning ocean views. The Lone Cypress is not only a visual spectacle but also a reminder of the importance of conservation. The Pebble Beach Company has taken steps to protect and preserve the tree, including limiting public access to its immediate base. The tree has faced a number of health challenges, including the effects of climate change and invasive pests. Visiting the Lone Cypress is an experience that will stay with you long after you leave. It's a chance to connect with nature, appreciate the beauty of the California coast, and reflect on the enduring power of a single tree that has stood the test of time. The best times to visit 17-Mile Drive are spring and fall—winters can be rainy, and in summer the fog can put a damper on views, sometimes all day long. The only public restroom along the drive is at Bird Rock. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a photography buff, or simply seeking a moment of tranquility, the Lone Cypress is a destination that should not be missed. It's a place where the beauty of the natural world takes center stage, offering a glimpse into the soul of the Monterey Peninsula.
