Discover more about Bouchaine Vineyards

Bouchaine Vineyards, nestled in the rolling hills of Napa Valley's Carneros District, stands as a testament to the region's rich history and enduring commitment to quality winemaking. As the oldest continuously operating winery in Carneros, Bouchaine offers visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time while indulging in world-class wines and immersive experiences. The story of Bouchaine began in the late 1880s when Boon Fly, a Missouri-born settler, planted grapes and fruit trees on the property. In 1927, Johnny Garetto, an Italian winemaker, purchased the land and established a winery, a bold move considering it was still during Prohibition. Garetto Winery wasn't completed until 1933, marking it as the first winery to receive a bond in Napa Valley post-Prohibition. The property changed hands again in 1961 when Beringer acquired it, using it primarily for storage. In 1981, Gerret and Tatiana Copeland purchased the estate and transformed it into the renowned winery it is today. The Copelands renovated the winery and added over 100 acres of estate vineyards. They also incorporated elements of the winery's history into its modern design. The distinctive brown siding on the buildings is hand-cut from large, old redwood fermentation tanks, a creative way to repurpose materials and preserve the winery's heritage. The new Visitor Center, opened in 2019, features a semi-circular design reminiscent of an open embrace, maximizing views of the vineyards, surrounding hills, and the San Francisco Bay in the distance. Today, Bouchaine Vineyards is celebrated for its sustainably farmed Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which benefit from the cool, breezy terroir of Carneros. The winery's commitment to sustainability is evident in its Fish-Friendly Farming certification and Napa Green certification. Bouchaine employs various eco-friendly practices, including cover cropping, using owl boxes for natural pest control, and employing falcons to protect the vineyards from birds that feed on ripening grapes. Visitors to Bouchaine can choose from a variety of tasting experiences, each designed to showcase the winery's exceptional wines and unique character. The Terrace Tasting offers stunning views of the Carneros landscape, while the Garden Tasting provides a relaxed setting for enjoying Bouchaine's wines with well-behaved canine companions. For a more in-depth experience, the Vine to Vessel tasting explores the influence of different aging vessels on wine flavor, while the Falconry in the Garden experience combines wine tasting with a demonstration of falconry, an ancient sport used to protect the vineyards from pests. Bouchaine also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including wine and cheese pairings, chocolate cooking classes, and live music performances. The winery's connection to music runs deep, as evidenced by its support of the Youth Music Series at the Festival Napa Valley. Bouchaine's new hilltop visitors' center features a concert piano, where guests can enjoy fine music alongside fine wines. Bouchaine's commitment to innovation is also evident in its use of technology to optimize grape growth. The winery has installed Cisco Industrial Asset Vision sensor technology to monitor water use and growing conditions, allowing for more precise and sustainable farming practices. This data is accessible to all stakeholders, enabling informed decisions about vineyard management. Bouchaine Vineyards is more than just a winery; it's a destination that offers a complete sensory experience. From the stunning views and sustainably farmed vineyards to the award-winning wines and immersive activities, Bouchaine provides a memorable and enriching experience for every guest. Whether you're a seasoned wine connoisseur or a curious novice, a visit to Bouchaine Vineyards is sure to be a highlight of your Napa Valley adventure. Bouchaine's wines are crafted with the goal of blending power and depth without sacrificing the ethereal perfume that is Pinot Noir. The winery produces a wide range of varietals, including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Meunier, Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, most of which are sold at the winery. Winemaker Chris Kajani joined Bouchaine in 2015, bringing with her a decade of knowledge of Carneros soils and microclimates. Bouchaine Vineyards is a place where history, innovation, and hospitality come together to create an unforgettable wine country experience. Whether you're seeking a romantic getaway, a fun-filled day with friends, or an educational exploration of winemaking, Bouchaine has something to offer everyone.
