Discover more about Bouchaine Vineyards

Nestled in the rolling hills of the Carneros region, at the southern tip of Napa Valley, Bouchaine Vineyards stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of winemaking in California. Established in the late 19th century, this historic estate has witnessed the evolution of Napa Valley from a fledgling wine region to a world-renowned destination. Bouchaine's story began in the 1880s when Boon Fly, a Missouri-born settler, planted grapes and fruit trees on the property. His pioneering spirit laid the foundation for what would become one of Carneros' most esteemed wineries. In 1927, Johnny Garetto, an Italian winemaker, acquired the land and continued its viticultural tradition. Garetto's tenure lasted until 1961 when he sold the property to Beringer, who utilized it primarily as a storage facility. It wasn't until 1981 that Bouchaine found its modern identity under the ownership of Gerret and Tatiana Copeland. The Copelands embarked on a mission to transform Bouchaine into a premier winery, investing in extensive renovations and expanding the estate vineyards to over 100 acres. Today, Bouchaine Vineyards is celebrated for its commitment to crafting exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, varietals that thrive in the cool, maritime-influenced climate of Carneros. The winery's dedication to sustainable farming practices further enhances the quality and character of its wines. Bouchaine was the first Fish-Friendly Farming certified winery in Napa Valley, a testament to its environmentally conscious approach. Visitors to Bouchaine are greeted by a stunning landscape of gently sloping hills adorned with meticulously maintained vineyards. The winery's architecture seamlessly blends modern design with rustic charm, incorporating reclaimed redwood from old fermentation tanks into the buildings' siding. The tasting room offers a welcoming space to sample Bouchaine's diverse portfolio of wines, while the outdoor terrace provides panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Beyond the exceptional wines and picturesque setting, Bouchaine offers a range of unique experiences that set it apart from other Napa Valley wineries. One of the most popular is the Falconry in the Vineyards program, where guests can witness the ancient art of falconry and learn about the role these majestic birds play in Bouchaine's sustainable farming practices. Other immersive experiences include cheese and charcuterie board masterclasses and clonal Pinot Noir tastings. Bouchaine's commitment to innovation extends beyond its winemaking and visitor experiences. The winery has embraced technology to enhance its farming practices, utilizing sensor technology to monitor water usage and optimize growing decisions. This dedication to precision viticulture ensures that Bouchaine's wines consistently reflect the unique terroir of Carneros. A visit to Bouchaine Vineyards is more than just a wine tasting; it's an opportunity to immerse oneself in the history, beauty, and innovation of Napa Valley. Whether you're a seasoned wine connoisseur or a curious newcomer, Bouchaine offers an unforgettable experience that will leave you with a deeper appreciation for the art of winemaking. The winery produces a wide range of varietals, including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Meunier, Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, most of them sold at the winery. Bouchaine is well regarded for its Pinot Noirs, which are balanced and terroir-based. Bouchaine's tasting room staff is very friendly and helpful. In 2008 the tasting room was totally remodeled and now shows wonderfully. In the mood for hiking? Bouchaine maintains a unique 7/10ths of a mile, self-guided vineyard walk, highlighted by 14 different stops. Not a bad way to work up a thirst by any means and plus, it is an educational tour as well. Bouchaine Vineyards is the oldest continuously operating winery in the Carneros District; a winery that began making wine long before the region earned its reputation for producing the great Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays of Carneros today. The roots of Bouchaine go back to long before Prohibition, when it was first owned by the remarkably-named Mr. Boon Fly, who grew grapes and fruit beginning in the late 1880's. The property was bought by Johnny Garetto in 1929, and sold in 1951 to Beringer, who used it as a blending and production facility for almost 30 years. It wasn't until Gerret and Tatiana Copeland became the sole proprietors that the winery and vineyards were completely renovated and over 100 acres of estate vineyards were added. Today, Bouchaine creates superior wines that capture the elegance of Burgundy and the exuberance and authenticity of Carneros.
