Discover more about Knowland Park

Knowland Park, officially the Joseph Knowland State Arboretum and Park, is a large open space in the Oakland Hills. Named after Joseph R. Knowland, who championed its preservation, the park offers a unique blend of natural beauty and recreational opportunities. The park's diverse terrain includes flatlands, rolling hills, oak woodlands, grasslands, and rare maritime chaparral. Hiking trails wind through these varied habitats, offering panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay, including the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island. The park is divided into eastern and western sections by Golf Links Road. The Oakland Zoo occupies the western portion, while the eastern section offers more rugged trails. Originally a state park acquired in 1948, Knowland Park was later leased to the City of Oakland with the stipulation that it always remain a public park. This commitment ensures that future generations can enjoy this natural treasure. The park serves as a vital habitat for local wildlife, including deer, coyotes, and various bird species.
