Gray Whale Cove State Beach: A Coastal Haven

Discover a secluded coastal escape at Gray Whale Cove State Beach, perfect for whale watching, relaxation, and enjoying scenic beauty.

4.7

Gray Whale Cove State Beach, also known as Devil's Slide, is a 3.1-acre California State Park offering a serene coastal experience. Located between Pacifica and Montara on Highway 1, about 18 miles south of San Francisco, the beach is easily accessible yet feels secluded. The cove is surrounded by steep cliffs, providing a dramatic backdrop and shelter from the wind. A steep trail and stairway lead down to the sandy beach, approximately 800 feet long. The beach is known for its frequent sightings of gray whales during their migration, typically in December/January (southbound) and March/April (northbound). Visitors can enjoy sunbathing, beachcombing, and whale watching. Hiking trails connect to nearby Montara Mountain and McNee Ranch State Park, offering panoramic views of the coastline. The north end of the beach has historically been known as a clothing-optional area. However, nudity is technically banned as it is a state park. Gray Whale Cove is also located near the Devil's Slide Bunker, a historic WWII structure, though access is currently restricted due to safety concerns.

  • Use caution when crossing Highway 1 to access the beach, as traffic can be heavy and there are no crosswalks.
  • Pack water, as there is no potable water available at the park.
