Discover more about Mission Bay

Mission Bay, a neighborhood mirroring San Francisco's own evolution, boasts a rich history. Once a 500-acre salt marsh and lagoon, it provided refuge for diverse waterfowl and sustenance for Native American tribes. The arrival of Spanish missionaries in 1775 marked a turning point, followed by the Gold Rush in 1849, which transformed the bay into a bustling industrial zone. Shipyards, canneries, and warehouses replaced the natural landscape, with debris from the 1906 earthquake used as landfill. In the late 1990s, a revitalization project began, converting the area into a master-planned community. Today, Mission Bay is a hub of healthcare, business, and technology, featuring luxury condominiums, restaurants, and a vibrant biotechnology sector. Key attractions include the Chase Center and Thrive City, offering entertainment and dining options. Numerous parks like Mission Creek Park and Bayfront Park provide green spaces for recreation. The UCSF Mission Bay campus showcases modern architecture and public art. Convenient transportation options make it easy to explore this dynamic neighborhood.
