The Panhandle: San Francisco's Green Escape

The Panhandle, an integral part of San Francisco's park system, extends eastward from Golden Gate Park, providing a vital green space for city dwellers. This linear park, approximately three-quarters of a mile long and a block wide, is bordered by Fell and Oak Streets and connects to Golden Gate Park at Stanyan Street. Originally conceived in 1870 as part of a grander design for Golden Gate Park, the Panhandle served as an experimental laboratory for trees and shrubs. Park engineers tested various species to determine their suitability for the sandy soil and windy conditions of San Francisco. Today, the Panhandle boasts a diverse collection of trees, including eucalyptus, Monterey pines, and cypresses, some of which are among the oldest in the park. The Panhandle offers a variety of recreational amenities, including paved walking and biking paths, basketball courts, a playground, and an outdoor gym. The William McKinley Memorial, located at the eastern end, features a statue and seating area, commemorating President McKinley. The park also serves as a community hub, hosting events and activities throughout the year. Bordering the Haight-Ashbury and Western Addition neighborhoods, the Panhandle is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Its location provides easy access to the cultural attractions, shops, and restaurants of these historic districts.
