Belly Up Tavern: Solana Beach's Legendary Music Venue

The Belly Up Tavern stands as a vibrant testament to the enduring power of live music and community spirit in Solana Beach. Since its inception in 1974, this iconic venue has evolved from a humble Quonset hut into a nationally recognized music destination, all while retaining its intimate atmosphere and unpretentious charm. The story of the Belly Up begins with Dave Hodges, a recent college graduate who, instead of pursuing a career in accounting, decided to open a bar with a friend. Inspired by a lack of happening places in North San Diego County, Hodges sought a location where friends could gather for a few beers in a relaxed setting. He found the perfect spot in a Quonset hut on Cedros Avenue, a prefabricated, half-moon-shaped building previously used by the Navy and a waterbed manufacturer. With a tongue-in-cheek nod to the business's potential for failure, Hodges christened his new venture the Belly Up Tavern. Initially, the Belly Up was a simple establishment with booze, pool tables, and a floor covered in peanut shells. However, it soon attracted a following of coast-route bikers, prompting Hodges to overhaul the bar's identity and introduce live music. Blues music became a staple, with the venue hosting legendary performers like Big Joe Turner, Big Mama Thornton, and Etta James. As the Belly Up's reputation grew, it expanded its musical horizons, booking local and national acts spanning genres from reggae to pop to hip-hop to indie rock. Over the years, the Belly Up has become a frequent stop for legends like John Lee Hooker, Etta James, and BB King. Epic performances by Curtis Mayfield, George Clinton, The Neville Brothers, and Toots and The Maytals also are a part of the club's early legacy. Since then, many artists have stopped by on their way up the ladder, including No Doubt, Black Eyed Peas, Mumford and Sons, Cold War Kids, Red Hot Chili Peppers and many many more. Major artists have done underplays at the venue in recent years, including The Killers, The Red Hot Chili Peppers (who also played the club for 200 people in 1985), Jimmy Buffett, Willie Nelson, Ben Harper, Damian Marley, and Tom Jones. And, perhaps most famously, the Rolling Stones played a private event here in 2015. In 2003, Hodges sold the Belly Up Tavern to Steve Goldberg and Phil Berkovitz, owners of the nearby Pacific Coast Grill. The new owners continued the Belly Up's tradition of showcasing diverse musical talent while also expanding its culinary offerings. They renovated the restaurant next door, naming it the Belly Up Tavern, adorning its walls with fliers from past concerts, immersing customers in the club's rich history. Today, the Belly Up stands as a testament to the power of live music to bring people together. Its intimate setting, exceptional acoustics, and unpretentious atmosphere create an unparalleled concert experience.
