Discover more about Cheeseboro Canyon Trail

Cheeseboro Canyon Trail provides a diverse outdoor experience within the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. The trail winds through varied terrains, including grasslands, oak-filled savannas, and chaparral slopes. For over 150 years, ranchers made these canyons their home. The gently rounded hills and canyons of Cheeseboro and Palo Comado are older than the steeper, more recently formed Santa Monica Mountains. The Chumash lived in these canyons for thousands of years. Many trails within the canyons may have originated with the Chumash and then were expanded by the ranchers who followed. Hikers can explore several interconnected trails, with options for short strolls or longer, more challenging loops. The main Cheeseboro Canyon Trail is a 4.6-mile path that follows an old ranch road, while more challenging trails, like the 4.4-mile Palo Comado Canyon Trail, offer a greater physical challenge. Along the way, visitors can enjoy views of Sulphur Springs, where the smell of sulfur is noticeable, and panoramic vistas from Simi Peak. The area is home to diverse wildlife, including deer, bobcats, coyotes, rabbits, owls, hawks, and other raptors. The trail is open from 8:00 AM to sunset, with free parking available. Visitors should be mindful of potential hazards such as ticks, bees, rattlesnakes, and poison oak.
