Discover more about Painted Canyon

Painted Canyon, located within the Mecca Hills Wilderness, presents a stunning display of nature's artistry. The canyon's walls are painted with a spectrum of colors—pinks, reds, grays, browns, and greens—created by the displacement of rock outcroppings and mudstone over millions of years by the San Andreas Fault. This geological wonder offers visitors a chance to witness the raw power of nature and the beauty of its creations. The canyon is accessible via Painted Canyon Road, a dirt road that winds through the Mecca Hills. Along the way, you'll find Palo Verde and smoke trees, and you might even spot desert bighorn sheep, desert tortoises, and spotted bats. The Ladder Canyon Trail, a popular hiking route, adds an element of adventure with its metal ladders that assist hikers in navigating the steep canyon walls. The hike is considered moderately difficult, and caution should be taken during the hotter months. Recently, Painted Canyon was included in the newly designated Chuckwalla National Monument, further protecting this natural landmark. This designation acknowledges the canyon's unique beauty, cultural significance to local indigenous peoples, and importance to scientists studying the effects of earthquakes.
