Discover more about Painted Canyon Trailhead

Painted Canyon Trailhead provides access to a remarkable hiking experience within the Mecca Hills Wilderness. This area is a geological wonder, formed by the convergence of the North American and Pacific Plates along the San Andreas Fault. Over millions of years, the movement of these plates has uplifted and overturned layers of rock, creating a landscape of narrow, steep canyons and colorful mineral deposits. The main attraction is the Ladder Canyon Trail, a 4.5-mile loop that combines the beauty of Painted Canyon with the adventure of climbing ladders in a slot canyon. The canyon walls display a stunning array of colors, including rose, pink, red, purple, and green, due to various mineral deposits. Keep an eye out for Palo Verde and Smoke Trees that add to the desert scenery. The hike involves navigating through sandy washes, climbing ladders to ascend dry waterfalls, and scrambling over rocks. The slot canyon section offers a cool respite from the desert sun, while the ridge provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Salton Sea. Be prepared for a moderate challenge, as some sections require using your hands and feet to climb. Remember to bring plenty of water, wear appropriate footwear, and be mindful of the desert environment.
