Discover more about Main Quad

The Main Quadrangle, often called Main Quad or simply Quad, stands as the heart and oldest section of Stanford University. This architecturally significant collection of connected buildings, initiated in 1887 and completed in 1906, has been a focal point of the university since its inception. Designed with a vision by Frederick Law Olmsted, the Quad showcases a harmonious blend of Richardsonian Romanesque and Mission Revival styles, characterized by its soft buff sandstone and arcaded walkways. Throughout its history, the Main Quad has endured and been restored after significant damage from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The exteriors have retained their original appearance, while the interiors have been adapted to modern needs. The Quad continues to fulfill its original purpose, housing classrooms, research facilities, and administrative offices. The Main Quad offers a glimpse into Stanford's rich history and commitment to interdisciplinary education. Visitors can explore the Memorial Church, a central architectural feature, and stroll through the Inner Quad courtyard. The Quad's design encourages exploration and reflection, embodying the spirit of Stanford University.
