    Discover more about Avila Adobe

The Avila Adobe, constructed in 1818 by Francisco José Avila, a prominent ranchero and mayor of Los Angeles, stands as the city's oldest residence. This historic adobe offers a unique glimpse into the lives of early Californios and the region's rich cultural heritage. Located on Olvera Street, within El Pueblo de Los Angeles State Historic Park, the Avila Adobe has witnessed Los Angeles evolve from a Spanish colony to a bustling American city. The thick adobe walls, made from sun-baked bricks, and the open courtyard reflect the Spanish colonial architectural style. The home's design provided natural temperature regulation, keeping it cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Originally, the ceilings were 15 feet high, supported by cottonwood beams. The roof, initially flat, was sealed with tar from the La Brea Tar Pits. Throughout its history, the Avila Adobe has served various purposes. It was briefly used as a military headquarters by the North American army under Robert Stockton in 1847. Later, it functioned as a restaurant and boarding house before falling into disrepair. In the 1920s, a public campaign led by Christine Sterling saved the adobe from demolition, transforming the surrounding area into a vibrant Mexican marketplace. Today, the Avila Adobe is a museum furnished to resemble its appearance in the 1840s. Visitors can explore the rooms, courtyard, and exhibits, gaining insights into the daily life of a wealthy Californio family. The site is free to visit and offers a fascinating journey into Los Angeles' past.
