Discover more about Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a beloved roller coaster-type attraction located in Frontierland at Disneyland Park. The ride takes you on a wild journey through a haunted gold mining town in the American Southwest, inspired by the stunning landscapes of Monument Valley and Bryce Canyon. The story begins in the late 1800s when gold was discovered on Big Thunder Mountain, transforming a small mining town into a thriving hub. However, eerie incidents began to occur, with trains racing through tunnels on their own. As you board the train, you'll descend into an abandoned mine shaft and speed along a rickety track, dodging exploding dynamite and falling boulders. The ride features sharp turns, drops into canyons, and a mysterious ghost town. Originally, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad was planned for Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom but was repurposed for Disneyland. The Disneyland version opened in 1979 and was designed by Imagineer Tony Baxter. The ride replaced the Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland, and tributes to the former attraction can be found in the scaled-down Western town near the station. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been praised for its immersive storytelling, humor, and thrilling moments, making it a classic Disneyland experience.
