    Discover more about Chinatown

Los Angeles' Chinatown is more than just a neighborhood; it's a living testament to the resilience and cultural richness of the Chinese-American community. Established in 1938, this vibrant enclave has evolved into a significant commercial and cultural center for Chinese and other Asian businesses in Central Los Angeles. Chinatown's story began long before its current location. The original Chinatown, dating back to the late 19th century, was located on Alameda and Macy Streets. However, it was demolished in the 1930s to make way for Union Station, the city's major transportation hub. In response, two new Chinatowns emerged in the late 1930s: China City and New Chinatown. While China City was short-lived due to fires, New Chinatown, the present-day Chinatown, has thrived. Today, Chinatown offers a captivating blend of old and new. Visitors can explore traditional Chinese architecture, art galleries, and a wide array of restaurants serving diverse cuisines. Central Plaza, with its iconic pagodas and statues, provides a glimpse into a 'Hollywoodized' version of Shanghai. Chung King Road is known as an art hub, featuring numerous galleries. The Chinese American Museum, located in the Garnier Building, showcases the history and contributions of Chinese Americans. Chinatown is also a culinary destination, offering everything from dim sum to street food. Visitors can savor traditional favorites at established restaurants or explore new culinary concepts. The neighborhood hosts various events throughout the year, including the Chinese New Year Festival and Chinatown Summer Nights, which highlight the community's dynamic culture.
