Discover more about Pershing Square

Pershing Square, a five-acre park in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, has a history as dynamic as the city itself. Originally dedicated as La Plaza Abaja in 1866, it served as the city's first public park. Over the years, the square has been known by several names before being formally dedicated to General John J. Pershing in 1918, honoring his service in World War I. Throughout its history, Pershing Square has undergone numerous transformations. In the early 20th century, a Beaux Arts redesign brought lush landscaping and ornate statues. A major change came in the 1950s with the construction of an underground parking garage with a capacity for 1,800 cars. A renovation completed in 1994, designed by architect Ricardo Legoretta and landscapist Laurie Olin, gave the park its current appearance. Today, Pershing Square is a bustling hub for community members and visitors alike. It features hardscapes and grass areas suitable for concerts, gatherings, and public celebrations. The park also includes fountains, monuments, statues, a seating platform, two children's playgrounds, a chess area, a pet area, and an amphitheater. Surrounded by hotels, restaurants, and local businesses, Pershing Square offers a place to relax and enjoy the city. The Pershing Square hosts various events, including concerts and community gatherings.
