Discover more about Santa Monica Pier

The Santa Monica Pier, a beloved landmark in Southern California, extends into the Pacific Ocean, offering a unique blend of amusement park thrills, classic seaside charm, and stunning views. Since its opening in 1909, the pier has evolved from a simple concrete structure built to carry sewer pipes to a world-renowned destination attracting millions of visitors each year. The pier is actually comprised of two adjoining piers: the long and narrow Municipal Pier, built in 1909, and the short, wide Pleasure Pier, also known as Newcomb Pier, built in 1916. The latter was the brainchild of Charles I.D. Looff, an amusement park pioneer, who filled it with attractions like the Looff Hippodrome Carousel, now a National Historic Landmark.Today, the Santa Monica Pier is home to Pacific Park, a family amusement park featuring the iconic solar-paneled Ferris wheel, the Pacific Wheel, and the West Coaster roller coaster. Visitors can also enjoy classic arcade games, explore the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, indulge in diverse dining options, shop for souvenirs, or even take a trapeze lesson. Fishing is a popular activity at the pier's west end. The pier also hosts outdoor concerts, movies, and other events throughout the year. The pier has faced challenges throughout its history, including threats of demolition and damage from severe storms. However, thanks to community efforts and revitalization projects, it has been restored to its former glory and continues to be a vibrant and accessible destination for all.
