Discover more about Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph stands as a testament to both faith and history in the heart of San Jose. The original St. Joseph's Church, named San Jose de Guadalupe, was established in 1803, becoming the first non-mission parish in California intended for Spanish settlers rather than Mission Indians. This marked the beginning of a long and transformative journey for the church. The original adobe structure faced numerous challenges, including damage from earthquakes in 1818 and 1822. A larger adobe church was constructed in its place between 1835 and 1846. However, disaster struck again in 1868 when the Hayward earthquake severely damaged the structure. A third church was started in 1869, but it was destroyed by fire in 1875. The fifth and current church was dedicated in 1877 while construction was still in progress. The portico was completed in 1884, followed by the large dome in 1885. In 1981, a major renovation project was undertaken to prepare the church to become the cathedral for the new Roman Catholic Diocese of San Jose. The church was officially elevated to a cathedral in 1985, with the restoration completed in 1990. Pope John Paul II designated the cathedral a minor basilica in 1997. Inside, visitors can admire the 39 stained glass windows, the Latin Frieze on the ceiling, and the Odell Organ, a unique instrument dating back to 1886. The basilica continues to serve as a vibrant center for religious services, cultural events, and community gatherings.
