Discover more about Folsom Historic District

The Folsom Historic District, known as the 'Heart' of Folsom, began in the 1850s, during the California Gold Rush. Gold prospectors, settlers, and even the Pony Express passed through this bustling center. The district saw the arrival of the West's first passenger train, marking a significant milestone in transportation. Although fires destroyed many businesses in the 1860s and 1880s, the area was rebuilt with brick buildings, reflecting a commitment to safety and progress. Today, the Historic District retains its charm with over 100 businesses, including boutique shops, diverse restaurants, wineries, and coffee shops. Visitors can explore the Folsom History Museum, catch a show at the Harris Center, or visit the Folsom Railroad Museum to see a reconstruction of the 1867 locomotive turntable. The district hosts year-round events, including concerts at the Zittel Family Amphitheater, farmers' markets, and craft fairs. The Sutter Street segment of the Lincoln Highway, the first transcontinental highway, ran through the district, further cementing its importance. A revitalization project in 2011 preserved the historic character while improving the area's utility and aesthetics. The district is also becoming known for its dedication to innovation and diversity.
