Discover more about McKinley Rose Garden

Located in Sacramento's McKinley Park, the McKinley Rose Garden, officially named the Frederick N. Evans Rose Garden, has been a beloved landmark since 1928. Named after Sacramento's first Superintendent of Parks, Frederick N. Evans, the 1.5-acre garden showcases over 1,200 rose bushes, including hybrid teas and old-fashioned varieties. The garden was originally intended to educate Sacramentans about roses and which varieties thrived best in the local climate. Today, the garden continues to be a popular destination for weddings, photoshoots, and leisurely strolls. The garden's design features planting beds and grassy paths, with new award-winning roses planted each year. The adjacent Shepard Garden and Arts Center hosts horticultural classes, art workshops, and events. McKinley Park itself has a rich history, initially established as East Park in 1871 by the Sacramento Trolley System to increase streetcar traffic. The city purchased the park in 1902 and renamed it McKinley Park in honor of President William McKinley. The McKinley Rose Garden provides a tranquil escape and a testament to Sacramento's horticultural heritage.
