Discover more about Sunset Cliffs Natural Park

Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is a captivating destination where the vast Pacific Ocean meets the rugged California coastline. This 68-acre park, stretching 1.5 miles along the western edge of Point Loma, is renowned for its dramatic sandstone cliffs, panoramic ocean views, and breathtaking sunsets. The park's history dates back millions of years, with fossils of mosasaurs from the Late Cretaceous period found in the area. The Kumeyaay people also inhabited the land, using the area to gather seafood and vegetation. In 1915, Albert Spalding invested $2 million to develop the cliffs, adding walkways, stairways and even a saltwater swimming pool carved into the rock. The City of San Diego dedicated the space as a park in 1983. Today, Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is divided into two main sections: the Linear Park and the Hillside Park. The Linear Park, a narrow strip between Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and the ocean, features several lookout points. The Hillside Park, a 50-acre conservation area, connects to the Point Loma Ecological Reserve. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including hiking along the cliffside trails, exploring tide pools, surfing, and whale watching.
