4.7

The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps are a true testament to community collaboration and artistic vision. Inspired by the famous Escadaria Selarón in Rio de Janeiro, the project was initiated in 2003 by neighborhood residents Jessie Audette and Alice Yee Xavier. Their goal was to connect neighbors and beautify the Golden Gate Heights area. Local artists Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher were chosen to design the mosaic panels. Over 220 neighbors sponsored handmade tiles, shaping animals, fish, and shells within the mosaic. The 163 steps, stretching 90 feet high, are adorned with over 2,000 unique tiles, comprising more than 75,000 glass fragments. The result is a breathtaking underwater scene that flows from the bottom to the top of the staircase, transitioning from the depths of the sea to the expanse of the sky. Completed in 2005, the 16th Avenue Tiled Steps quickly became a beloved landmark. The opening ceremony on August 27, 2005, was celebrated with lion dancers and attended by dignitaries, including Francesco Pignataro, the mayor of Caltagirone, Italy, home to the steps' sister staircase, Staircase of Santa Maria del Monte. Today, the steps are a popular destination for both locals and tourists, offering not only a functional pathway but also a beautiful work of art. In addition to the mosaic, the steps feature gardens on both sides, showcasing native California plants and succulents. These gardens support local wildlife, including the endangered green hairstreak butterfly. The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps serve as a reminder of the power of community-driven art and the beauty that can arise from a shared vision.
