    Discover more about Bison Paddock

The Bison Paddock in Golden Gate Park provides a surprising encounter with the American West in the heart of San Francisco. Since 1891, bison have roamed this enclosure, offering visitors a chance to observe these majestic animals. The story of the Bison Paddock is rooted in conservation. In the late 19th century, the American bison population dwindled to near extinction due to overhunting and habitat loss. Golden Gate Park Superintendent John McLaren introduced bison to the park as part of a captive breeding program to help preserve the species. The first bison, a bull named Ben Harrison, arrived in 1891. Over the years, the park's herd produced over 500 calves, playing a vital role in saving the species. Today, the Bison Paddock remains a popular attraction, offering a glimpse into the past and a reminder of successful conservation efforts. The current herd consists of female bison, ensuring a peaceful group dynamic. Maintained by the San Francisco Zoo and the Recreation & Parks Department, the paddock provides a natural environment for the bison to roam and graze. Visitors can observe the bison's behavior and appreciate their impressive stature against the backdrop of Golden Gate Park's landscapes.
