    Discover more about Crissy Field

Crissy Field, located on the northern shore of the San Francisco Peninsula, is a vibrant testament to urban renewal and ecological restoration. Once a bustling military airfield, it has been transformed into a beloved national park site within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The area boasts a rich history, serving as an ancient salt marsh and estuary for the Ramaytush Ohlone people, and later as a strategic military outpost. In the early 20th century, Crissy Field played a pivotal role in aviation history, hosting the U.S. Army's first Air Coast Defense Station on the Pacific coast. It witnessed groundbreaking aviation innovations, including long-distance and around-the-world flying records. However, by 1974, the airfield closed to fixed-wing aircraft, and the site was transferred to the National Park Service in 1994. The transformation of Crissy Field into a public recreation area began with an extensive restoration project, which involved removing hazardous materials and revitalizing the tidal wetlands. Today, visitors can enjoy a mile-long waterfront promenade, relax on the beaches, explore the Crissy Field Center, and observe diverse bird species in the restored tidal marsh. The Warming Hut offers a cozy escape with tea, hot chocolate, and coffee. Crissy Field stands as a unique landscape where the urban and natural worlds converge, offering a blend of recreation, history, and stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the San Francisco Bay.
