Union Square: The Heart of San Francisco

Getting There

• BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit)

  If you are coming from the East Bay, take the BART train to the Powell Street Station. Once you exit the train, follow the signs to the escalators and elevators that lead to the street level. When you reach the surface, you will be at Powell Street. Union Square is just a short walk from here. Head west on Powell Street and turn left on Geary Street. Continue walking until you reach Union Square, which will be on your right.

• Muni (San Francisco Municipal Transportation)

  For those coming from the southern part of the city, take the Muni Metro train to the Powell Street Station. After disembarking, use the same directions as BART: follow the signs to the escalators and elevators to street level. Once on Powell Street, walk west and turn left on Geary Street. Walk straight until you arrive at Union Square, which will be visible on your right.

• Walking

  If you are already in the vicinity, Union Square is easily accessible on foot. From the Westfield San Francisco Centre (a large shopping mall), exit onto Market Street. Walk north on Market Street and turn right on Powell Street. Continue walking until you reach the intersection of Powell and Geary Streets. Union Square will be right ahead of you, marked by the large park area.

• Cable Car

  To experience a classic San Francisco ride, hop on a cable car at the Powell-Hyde or Powell-Mason line. Ride it towards the Powell Street Terminus. Once you get off at Powell Street, you can easily walk to Union Square. Just head west along Powell Street and turn left on Geary Street, walking a few blocks until you reach the square.

• Bus

  You can also take a Muni bus to Union Square. Routes 30, 38, and 45 stop nearby. Find your nearest bus stop and take one of these routes. When you arrive at the stop on Geary Street, walk a short distance towards Union Square, which is just a block away.
