    Discover more about Pershing Square

Pershing Square, located in the heart of the Presidio's Main Post, is more than just a scenic spot; it's a place steeped in history and marked by both triumph and tragedy. Named in honor of General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing, a prominent figure in early 20th-century military history, the square serves as a memorial to Pershing's wife and three daughters, who perished in a devastating fire on this site in 1915. Today, visitors can experience a blend of historical exploration, natural beauty, and recreational opportunities. Originally, the area now known as Pershing Square housed officers' quarters. In 1914, General Pershing was stationed at the Presidio as commander of the Eighth Brigade. He was later dispatched to the Mexican border. The following year, tragedy struck when a fire consumed the Pershing family home, claiming the lives of his wife, Frances, and three of their four children. The army never rebuilt the house, and the area was dedicated as Pershing Square, a lasting tribute to the family's memory. The square features several points of interest. A flagpole stands at the former site of the Pershing residence, serving as a somber reminder of the events that unfolded there. Two bronze cannons, forged in Peru in the 1600s, are among the oldest pieces of artillery in North America. These cannons were originally mounted at Castillo de San Joaquin, a Spanish fort built to guard the Golden Gate. Just east of Pershing Square lies the site of the original Spanish Presidio, established in 1776. A boulder marks the northwest corner of the original Presidio, which formed a square approximately 300 feet on each side. During select years in the summer, Pershing Square hosts an active archaeology dig, offering visitors a unique opportunity to witness history being unearthed. This project, the largest public archaeology endeavor west of the Mississippi, allows visitors to interact with Presidio archaeologists as they uncover the remnants of the original Spanish colonial fort. This hands-on experience provides a tangible connection to the Presidio's earliest days. Pershing Square also offers practical amenities for visitors. Picnic tables provide a relaxing space to enjoy a meal with views of the Main Post and San Francisco Bay. The square is easily accessible on foot or by the free Presidio GO Shuttle. A paid parking lot is conveniently located nearby at the intersection of Graham Street and Moraga Avenue, opposite the Presidio Officers' Club. Across the street from Pershing Square stands the Presidio Officers' Club, the park's oldest building. Here, visitors can explore free history exhibits that delve into the Presidio's multifaceted past. The Officers' Club also houses Colibri Mexican Bistro, offering dining options, and serves as a venue for weddings and other celebrations. Don't miss the Mesa Room, where you can view adobe walls dating back two centuries, and the EXCLUSION exhibition, which details an important period in American history. Pershing Square is an integral part of the Main Post History Loop, a one-mile walking itinerary that showcases the Presidio's historical highlights. This loop includes stops at the Presidio Visitor Center, Funston Avenue (Officers' Row), the Chapel of Our Lady, the Presidio Officers' Club, Pershing Square, and the Montgomery Street Barracks. The Main Post Loop provides a comprehensive overview of the Presidio's rich heritage. Whether you're interested in military history, archaeology, or simply enjoying a peaceful picnic in a scenic setting, Pershing Square offers a multifaceted experience within the Presidio. Its blend of historical significance, natural beauty, and recreational amenities makes it a worthwhile destination for any visitor exploring this iconic San Francisco landmark.
