Discover more about Bison Paddock

Nestled within Golden Gate Park, the Bison Paddock provides a serene glimpse into the American West. Since 1891, bison have roamed this enclosure, offering a unique and unexpected sight within the urban landscape of San Francisco. The paddock serves as a reminder of successful conservation efforts, as the bison population dwindled to near extinction in the late 1800s due to overhunting and habitat loss. Golden Gate Park Superintendent John McLaren introduced bison to the park to help preserve the species. The bison initially lived near the Music Concourse before being moved to their current location in the western part of the park in 1899. Over the years, the herd has been named after public figures, Shakespearean characters, and Native American tribes. Today, the paddock is home to an all-female herd. The San Francisco Zoo & Gardens manages the bison's care. Visitors can observe these majestic animals in a peaceful environment, surrounded by the park's lush greenery. Informative plaques detail the history and significance of bison in American culture. The best times to visit are early morning or late afternoon when the bison are most active.
