Getting There

  • Public Transport

While Candlestick Point is not directly accessible by public transit, several options exist. SFMTA offers bus service to the intersection of Thomas Mellon Drive and Executive Park Boulevard, about a mile west of the park. From there, walk east towards the bay. Alternatively, take Caltrain to the Bayshore station, then transfer to the 56-Rutland bus to Executive Park Plaza; a short walk across the road will lead you to the shoreline.

Candlestick Point State Recreation Area, a 204-acre urban oasis, stands as a testament to community-led revitalization and the enduring appeal of nature within city limits. Established in 1977 as California's first urban state park, it arose from the efforts of Bayview-Hunters Point residents who sought to reclaim the shoreline from junkyards. The park's name has a few origin stories. One suggests it's named after Candlestick Rock, a now-gone rock formation. Another theory points to the long-billed curlew, also known as the candlestick bird, once abundant in the area. A more colorful tale recalls the 19th-century practice of burning abandoned sailing ships, their flaming masts resembling lighted candlesticks. Today, Candlestick Point offers a diverse landscape of grassy uplands, coastal salt marsh, and pocket beaches. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including fishing from the public pier (no license required for pier fishing), windsurfing, bird watching, and picnicking. The park is home to various wildlife, including hawks, herons, ground squirrels, and jackrabbits. Many migratory ducks also overwinter in the warmer bay waters. The park provides accessible trails, picnic areas with BBQ grills, and restrooms. It's a place where community members gather to connect with nature, exercise, and find respite from the urban bustle.
