Candlestick Point State Recreation Area: San Francisco's Bayfront Escape

Candlestick Point State Recreation Area, a 204-acre urban oasis, stands as a testament to community-led revitalization and the enduring appeal of nature within city limits. Established in 1977 as California's first urban state park, it arose from the efforts of Bayview-Hunters Point residents who sought to reclaim the shoreline from junkyards. The park's name has a few origin stories. One suggests it's named after Candlestick Rock, a now-gone rock formation. Another theory points to the long-billed curlew, also known as the candlestick bird, once abundant in the area. A more colorful tale recalls the 19th-century practice of burning abandoned sailing ships, their flaming masts resembling lighted candlesticks. Today, Candlestick Point offers a diverse landscape of grassy uplands, coastal salt marsh, and pocket beaches. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including fishing from the public pier (no license required for pier fishing), windsurfing, bird watching, and picnicking. The park is home to various wildlife, including hawks, herons, ground squirrels, and jackrabbits. Many migratory ducks also overwinter in the warmer bay waters.
