    Discover more about Crissy Field

Crissy Field, located on the northern shore of the San Francisco Peninsula, boasts a rich history and offers visitors a remarkable experience. Once a tidal wetland used by the Ohlone people, it evolved into a military airfield and has now been restored as a breathtaking urban national park. In 1919, the bay shoreline was converted into an airfield, hosting the U.S. Army's First Transcontinental Reliability and Endurance Test across North America. Later that year, it was named in honor of Major Dana H. Crissy, who lost his life during a demonstration transcontinental flight. Crissy Field played a central role in early 20th-century military aviation, with pilots performing maneuvers, mock battles, and surveying the western United States by air. After serving as a key military base, Crissy Field was transformed into a national park site in 2001. The restoration project added educational programs and visitor services, reusing historic structures for the Crissy Field Center and the Warming Hut. Today, visitors can walk or bike on the promenade, enjoy the beaches and picnic areas, and observe birds at the restored tidal marsh. Crissy Field offers a variety of attractions, including the West Bluff with its picnic area and trails to the Golden Gate Bridge and Fort Point. The restored shoreline provides a habitat for native species, while the Golden Gate Promenade and San Francisco Bay Trail offer stunning coastal views. The Crissy Field Center provides environmental education programs for youth.
