The Main Parade Lawn, located in the heart of the Presidio, is a vibrant seven-acre public space with a storied past. Established in 1898, it initially served as a training ground for soldiers stationed at the adjacent Montgomery Street Barracks. Military drills and ceremonies were common sights on this dusty field.
In 1951, the lawn was paved and converted into a parking lot, serving this purpose for over six decades. However, in 2011, the asphalt was removed, and the area was revitalized as a green gathering space for all to enjoy.
Today, the Main Parade Lawn is a popular spot for picnics, recreation, and relaxation. Visitors can soak in the sun, play games, or simply enjoy the views of the San Francisco Bay and the surrounding historic buildings. The lawn is also a hub for community events, including festivals and cultural performances. Its central location provides easy access to other Presidio attractions such as the Presidio Tunnel Tops, the Presidio Visitor Center, and the Walt Disney Family Museum.

Public Transport
From downtown San Francisco, take the Muni Route 43 Masonic. This bus line stops at the Presidio Transit Center, a short walk from the Main Parade Lawn. Alternatively, use the free PresidiGo Downtown Shuttle, which connects the Main Post with the Embarcadero BART station and the Transbay Terminal. A single ride on Muni costs $2.85, which is good for 120 minutes of travel. A day pass costs $5.70. The PresidiGo Shuttle is free.
Walking
If you are already within the Presidio, the Main Parade Lawn is easily accessible on foot. It's located off the Presidio Promenade trail, between Montgomery, Lincoln, Graham, and Sheridan Streets, next to the Presidio Visitor Center. Follow the signs towards the Main Post and the Visitor Center.
