Discover more about Oakland Zoo

The Oakland Zoo, managed by the Conservation Society of California, has been a beloved Bay Area institution since 1922. Originally founded by naturalist Henry A. Snow, the zoo has moved locations several times before settling into its current home in Knowland Park. Today, the zoo is recognized for its commitment to animal welfare, conservation efforts, and engaging educational programs. The zoo is divided into several distinct regions, each showcasing animals in naturalistic habitats. The African Savanna features giraffes, zebras, lions, and elephants, while the Tropical Rainforest is home to playful white-handed gibbons. The Wayne and Gladys Valley Children's Zoo offers interactive exhibits and close encounters with lemurs, otters, and a variety of reptiles and amphibians. A highlight is the California Trail, opened in 2018, which focuses on California wildlife, past and present, including grizzly bears, gray wolves, mountain lions, and California condors. Visitors can take a scenic gondola ride up to the California Trail, enjoying breathtaking views of the San Francisco Bay Area. Beyond exhibits, the Oakland Zoo is deeply involved in conservation. The zoo actively participates in rescue and rehabilitation efforts, providing care for animals injured by wildfires or human-wildlife conflict. The zoo's conservation plan focuses on species and habitat protection, mitigating wildlife trade, and promoting human-wildlife coexistence.
