The Koret Children's Quarter, located in Golden Gate Park, has been a cherished destination for families for over a century. Originally opened in 1888 as the Sharon Quarters for Children, it is considered one of the first public playgrounds in the United States. The playground was designed as a space dedicated to children's play and well-being.
The Koret Children's Quarter features a historic Herschell-Spillman carousel, built in 1914. The carousel houses 62 hand-carved animals, including horses, frogs, roosters, pigs, and even a dragon. Painted panels depicting San Francisco landmarks decorate the carousel's interior. A German band organ provides music for the ride.
Adjacent to the carousel is the Koret Children's Quarter playground, offering a blend of historical charm and modern play structures. The playground includes a climbing wall shaped like waves and a rope climbing structure. One of the playground's original features, a concrete slide, remains a favorite among visitors.

Public Transport
Several bus lines serve the Koret Children's Quarter. From downtown, take the N Judah Muni line to the UCSF/ Parnassus station, then walk about 5 minutes to the park entrance. Alternatively, several bus lines stop near Stanyan St & Waller St or Haight St & Stanyan St, each about a 6-minute walk to the playground. Single ride fares are around $3.
Walking
From nearby attractions within Golden Gate Park, such as the California Academy of Sciences or the de Young Museum, the Koret Children's Quarter is accessible by a pleasant walk through the park's pathways. Follow signs towards the southeast corner of the park, near the SF Lawn Bowling Club. The walk is mostly flat and takes approximately 15-20 minutes.
Driving
Parking is available on the streets surrounding Golden Gate Park, but it can be challenging, especially on weekends. There is a small parking lot near the SF Lawn Bowling Club, adjacent to the park. Parking is free but limited. Expect to spend time searching for a spot, especially during peak hours.
