Rincon Park: Waterfront Oasis with Cupid's Arrow

Rincon Park, located on the Embarcadero at the foot of Rincon Hill, is a vibrant waterfront park offering respite and stunning views in the heart of San Francisco. The park is best known for Cupid's Span, a large-scale sculpture by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, depicting a bow and arrow partially buried in the ground. Installed in 2002, the sculpture has become a beloved symbol of the city, representing San Francisco's reputation for love, creativity, and its history as a home port of Eros, the Greek god of love. The park itself features expansive lawns perfect for picnicking and relaxing, with low seat walls reminiscent of lapping waves. Rincon Park's location has a rich history. Originally, the area was a sandy peninsula and the southern shoreline of Yerba Buena Cove. After the Gold Rush, Rincon Hill became a fashionable residential neighborhood, but the 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed many of the mansions, leading to its transformation into an industrial area.
