Discover more about The Panhandle

The Panhandle, a three-quarter-mile-long and one-block-wide park in San Francisco, serves as the eastern extension of Golden Gate Park. This narrow strip of green space, bordered by Fell and Oak Streets, provides a serene escape from the urban bustle. Originally, the area was known as the "Great Sand Bank" in 1853. In 1870, the Panhandle became William Hammond Hall's experimental laboratory for finding suitable vegetation to stabilize the dunes. Hall successfully transformed the area by planting barley, sea bent grass, and yellow lupin, followed by Monterey Pines, Monterey Cypresses, and Eucalyptus trees. Today, the Panhandle boasts a diverse collection of trees from around the world, making it an outdoor arboretum. The Panhandle offers various recreational amenities, including basketball courts, a playground, and exercise equipment. Paved walking and biking paths run the length of the park, providing routes for exercise and leisure. The William McKinley Memorial, dedicated by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1904, stands at the eastern end, adding a historical touch. Despite proposals to expand it, including one for a freeway in the 1950s, the Panhandle has remained a beloved park thanks to community efforts. It continues to serve as a vital link between the Richmond and Sunset Districts and other parts of San Francisco, offering a car-free route for pedestrians and cyclists.
