The Main Parade Lawn, located in the heart of the Presidio, is a vibrant seven-acre gathering space with a captivating history. Established in 1898, it served as a dusty training ground for soldiers stationed at the adjacent Montgomery Street Barracks. They conducted drills and participated in military ceremonies here. In 1937, it was converted into a parking lot, serving that purpose for over six decades.
In 2011, a transformation began, turning two-thirds of the parking lot back into a green space for everyone to enjoy. Today, the Main Parade Lawn is where San Francisco comes to relax. On any given day, you might see people flying kites, enjoying food from Presidio food trucks, or simply lounging on the grass with a book.
The lawn is framed by historic buildings and offers stunning views of the San Francisco Bay. It's also steps away from other popular attractions such as Presidio Tunnel Tops, the Presidio Visitor Center, and The Walt Disney Family Museum. The Main Parade Lawn hosts various events throughout the year, including concerts, festivals, and community celebrations.

Public Transport
From downtown San Francisco, take the Muni 43 bus directly to the Presidio Transit Center, which is next to the Main Parade Lawn. Alternatively, take BART to Embarcadero Station and transfer to the free Presidio GO Shuttle Downtown Route, which also stops at the Presidio Transit Center. Muni fares are typically around $3 per ride. The Presidio GO Shuttle is free.
Walking
If you are already within the Presidio, the Main Parade Lawn is easily accessible by foot. It's located off the Presidio Promenade Trail, between Montgomery, Lincoln, Graham, and Sheridan Streets, next to the Presidio Visitor Center. Follow signs for the Presidio Visitor Center or Presidio Transit Center.
Car
From Highway 101, follow signs for the Presidio and take the Presidio exit. Paid parking is available in the lots near the Presidio Visitor Center and Presidio Transit Center. Parking fees vary by day. Limited free parking may be available on Montgomery Street.
