Bicycle
Start at the San Mateo Caltrain Station. Rent a bike from a nearby bike rental shop. Head north on 2nd Avenue, then take a left on El Camino Real (CA-82) heading toward the San Francisco Bay. Follow signs to US-101 North. Once you reach the highway, use the bike lane to continue north until you reach the exit for CA-1 towards Pacifica. Follow CA-1 and look for Marin Headlands signs. The bike ride will take approximately 1.5 hours.
Public Transportation
From San Mateo, walk to the San Mateo Caltrain Station. Take the Caltrain northbound toward San Francisco. Get off at Millbrae Station and transfer to BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) towards Daly City. At Daly City, transfer to the bus line 28 toward Pacifica. Get off at the Marin Headlands stop. This journey will take about 2.5 hours, including transfer times.
Walking
Although walking from San Mateo to Marin Headlands is not practical due to distance, you can take a local walking trail that connects to the Bay Trail. Start at the San Mateo Park and head west towards the Bay Trail. Follow the trail north, enjoying views of the bay. You will eventually need to catch a bus or bike to cover the remaining distance to Marin Headlands.
