Public Transit
From San Mateo, walk to the nearest Caltrain station, San Mateo Station. Once there, purchase a ticket to the San Francisco 4th and King Street station. The train ride takes approximately 30 minutes. When you arrive at 4th and King, exit the station and walk to the Muni light rail station. Take the Muni T line towards Chinatown. After 4 stops, get off at the Castro station. From there, it's a short walk to The Castro, located at San Francisco, CA 94114.
Bicycle
If you prefer biking, rent a bicycle from one of the local bike rental shops in San Mateo. Then head west towards the Bay Trail. Follow the trail north along the coastline until you reach the San Francisco Bay Bridge. Once you enter San Francisco, follow the signs to The Castro neighborhood. This route is approximately 15 miles and may take about an hour depending on your biking speed.
Walking
For those who enjoy walking, you can start from downtown San Mateo. Walk north along El Camino Real until you reach the Hillsdale Shopping Center. From there, continue heading northwest toward the Bay Trail. Once you reach the Bay Trail, follow it until you get to the San Francisco Bay. After that, head towards the San Francisco city center. This route is quite long (approximately 18 miles) and will take several hours, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes and stay hydrated.
