The Fillmore: San Francisco's Iconic Music Venue

The Fillmore, located at 1805 Geary Blvd in San Francisco, stands as a monument to the city's vibrant musical history. Built in 1912, the building initially served as the Majestic Hall and Academy of Dancing, hosting social gatherings and masquerade balls. Over the years, it transformed into the Ambassador Dance Hall and later a roller skating rink, before becoming The Fillmore Auditorium in 1954. In the mid-1960s, under the guidance of promoter Bill Graham, The Fillmore became the epicenter of the San Francisco Sound, launching the careers of legendary bands such as the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and Big Brother and the Holding Company. The venue was known for its psychedelic atmosphere and groundbreaking performances, playing a pivotal role in the Beat and Hippie movements. The Fillmore closed for a period, but it reopened in 1994 and has continued to host a wide array of musical acts, maintaining its status as a premier venue. The Fillmore is located on the edge of the Fillmore District, a neighborhood with a rich history of its own. The Fillmore District rose to prominence after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, becoming a major commercial and cultural center. During the 1940s and 50s, it was known as the "Harlem of the West" due to its vibrant jazz scene. Today, the Fillmore District is a diverse neighborhood with a strong sense of community. Today, The Fillmore can accommodate up to 1,315 guests for a standard show. The venue is general admission, with standing room in the main ballroom, and limited seating available at the upstairs bar.
