Hill-Carrillo Adobe: A Glimpse into Santa Barbara's Past

The Hill-Carrillo Adobe, located in downtown Santa Barbara, offers a captivating journey into the region's past. Built in 1825 and 1826 by Daniel Hill, a Massachusetts native and one of the first American citizens to settle in the area, the adobe is a significant architectural and historical landmark. Hill constructed the home for his wife, Rafaela Luisa Ortega y Olivera, a granddaughter of José Francisco Ortega, who founded the Royal Presidio of Santa Barbara. The adobe was among the first buildings in the area to feature wooden floors and glass windows, showcasing Hill's influence and resources. It quickly became a social hub, hosting prominent citizens and families, and playing a role in the city's cultural and philanthropic development. In 1833, it was the birthplace of Isabel Larkin, the first child born to American parents in Santa Barbara. The city's first council meetings were held here in 1850. The Carrillo family, who acquired the property in 1860, were influential landowners and politicians. Today, the Hill-Carrillo Adobe is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a California Historical Landmark. The Hutton Parker Foundation owns the building and collaborated with the Santa Barbara Historical Museum to restore it. Visitors can explore the meticulously maintained grounds and admire the original art and antique furnishings.
