Dating back to 1797, it originated as the plaza mayor of the Spanish Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe, making it the oldest public space in Northern California. For over two centuries, this plaza has been at the heart of San Jose, witnessing the city's evolution from a small pueblo to a major technological hub.Originally named Liberty Square during the Mexican-American War, the plaza was rededicated in 1993 in honor of Cesar Chavez, the iconic civil rights activist who dedicated his life to advocating for farmworkers' rights. Chavez had an office nearby with his United Farm Workers union.The plaza is surrounded by significant landmarks and institutions, including The Tech Interactive, the San Jose Museum of Art, City National Civic, and St. Joseph's Cathedral Basilica. The park was renovated in the 1980s, adding a small stage that hosts weekly summer concerts.Throughout the year, Plaza de Cesar Chavez comes alive with a variety of events and festivals. These include the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest, Music in the Park, and Christmas in the Park. The plaza features landscaped flower beds, water fountains, and an open-air theater.
