Potem Creek Falls, also known as Potem Falls, is a hidden gem in Northern California's Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The 70-foot waterfall plunges into a wide, deep pool that is perfect for swimming. The falls and surrounding gorge offer a cool escape during the hot summer months. The short hike to the falls is an easy.3 mile each way. The trail consists of a series of switchbacks that descend into the gorge carved out by the falls. The trail can be narrow and rocky in places, so sturdy shoes are recommended. Potem Creek flows strongest in winter and spring, especially after rainstorms. Late spring through early fall is the best time to swim, when air temperatures are highest. The area around the falls provides opportunities for hiking, swimming, and photography.

    Getting There

    Driving

    From Redding, take Highway 299 East for approximately 30.5 miles. Turn left onto Fenders Ferry Road (also known as Forest Road 34N17), and continue for about 9.4 miles. The first 3.5 miles are paved, then the road turns to dirt. After crossing the Pit River bridge, the unsigned trailhead will be on your left. The parking area is a wide pullout on the side of the road. Note that Fenders Ferry Road is a dirt road, and a four-wheel drive or high-clearance vehicle is recommended. There are no fees for parking or access.

    Walking

    From the parking area, the trail to Potem Falls is a short, 0.3-mile descent into the gorge. The trail consists of a series of switchbacks. Follow the well-worn path down to the base of the falls. Be cautious as the trail can be narrow and rocky in places. The hike back up is strenuous but short.
