Discover more about Sundial Bridge

The Sundial Bridge, officially opened on July 4, 2004, has become an iconic symbol of Redding, California. Designed by the renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the bridge is a pedestrian and bicycle-only crossing that spans the Sacramento River, linking the north and south areas of Turtle Bay Exploration Park. This unique structure also serves as one of the world's largest working sundials. The bridge's design is a marvel of engineering and art. The 217-foot pylon, inclined at a 42-degree angle, supports the bridge deck via a network of cables, creating a visually stunning and structurally efficient cantilever spar cable-stayed bridge. The bridge is 700 feet in length and its deck is surfaced with translucent structural glass that is illuminated from beneath, creating an aquamarine glow at night. The absence of riverbed supports protects the salmon spawning grounds below, demonstrating environmental sensitivity. As a functional sundial, the bridge casts a shadow that indicates the time, though it's most accurate during the Summer Solstice. The shadow moves about one foot per minute when visible. The bridge also provides access to the Sacramento River Trail, a 35-mile trail system for hiking, walking, and cycling. The plazas at both ends of the bridge offer spaces for public use, with the north-side plaza extending to the river's edge. The bridge is a popular venue for community events, enhancing civic pride and togetherness.
