Soquel Demonstration State Forest (SDSF), often called "Demo" by locals, is a 2,681-acre working forest in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Managed by CAL FIRE, it's a unique destination where sustainable timber production, research, and recreation coexist. Established in 1990, SDSF is the only state forest near major urban areas like the San Francisco Bay Area and Monterey Bay Area.Originally part of a Mexican land grant, the area was logged before the State acquired it in 1988. Today, SDSF demonstrates responsible forest management while offering public access to coastal redwoods, mixed hardwood forests, and riparian ecosystems. The forest's diverse terrain and well-maintained trails attract hikers, equestrians, and especially mountain bikers.SDSF is renowned for its mountain biking trails, including the popular Flow Trail, Braille Trail, Corral Trail and Ridge Trail. These trails offer challenges for intermediate and advanced riders, with long climbs and technical descents. Hikers can explore fire roads and single-track trails, with quieter, less-logged areas west of the Sawpit Trail. Keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife and plant life, including redwoods, Douglas fir, and various hardwood species.Visitors should note that SDSF is a working forest, and timber harvesting may be ongoing. Check for current closures before visiting. The forest is open from dawn to dusk for day use only; camping is not permitted.
