Discover more about Mount San Jacinto State Park

Mount San Jacinto State Park and Wilderness offers a stunning contrast to the surrounding Southern California desert. Rising to 10,834 feet, the park encompasses a diverse landscape of granite peaks, sub-alpine forests, and mountain meadows. Originally inhabited by the Cahuilla people, the area later saw logging and mining before being designated a Forest Reserve in 1897. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) established the state park in the 1930s, building many of the trails and structures still in use today. Today, visitors can explore over 50 miles of hiking trails, ranging from easy nature walks to challenging climbs to San Jacinto Peak. The park is accessible via Highway 243 or the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which whisks visitors from the desert floor to the Mountain Station at 8,516 feet. From there, trails lead into the wilderness, offering views of alpine meadows and a historic ranger station. Popular activities include hiking, camping, wildlife viewing, and in the winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The park boasts two campgrounds, Idyllwild and Stone Creek, with accessible campsites available. Keep an eye out for mule deer, foxes, mountain lions, and various bird species. Whether you're seeking a challenging hike or a peaceful retreat in nature, Mount San Jacinto State Park offers a unique and unforgettable experience.
