Kappelmann, Willms initially engaged in various ventures, including operating a hotel and butcher shop in the nearby town of Buena Vista. However, their entrepreneurial spirit soon led them to recognize the burgeoning demand for resources among the growing population of miners and settlers.In 1852, Willms and Kappelmann acquired a 3,600-acre tract of land and established a ranching operation. Initially, they focused on raising horses to supply the booming mining towns of Virginia City, Nevada, and Bodie, California. Their "KW" brand became the first registered brand in Tuolumne County, a testament to their pioneering role in the region's agricultural development. The partners also demonstrated their ingenuity by constructing the Table Mountain Water Company, providing essential water resources for mining activities in the Buena Vista area.As the Gold Rush era waned, Willms and Kappelmann adapted their business to meet the changing needs of the community. Following Kappelmann's death in 1881, Willms transitioned the ranch into a cattle operation, expanding the land holdings to over 10,000 acres.
