Discover more about NASA Ames Research Center

NASA Ames Research Center, situated at Moffett Federal Airfield in Mountain View, California, stands as a cornerstone of NASA's research endeavors. Established in 1939 as the second laboratory of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), it has evolved into a leading center for aerospace innovation. Named in honor of Joseph Sweetman Ames, a pioneering physicist and founding member of NACA, the center has played a vital role in shaping the landscape of aeronautics, spaceflight, and information technology. Throughout its history, Ames has been at the forefront of groundbreaking research, initially focusing on wind-tunnel testing for propeller-driven aircraft. During World War II, the center provided crucial expertise and infrastructure to enhance America's military air power. Over the decades, nearly every American aircraft has undergone testing at Ames. Its contributions extend to managing key space missions, including the Pioneer program and the Galileo probe. Ames researchers were also among the first to analyze lunar samples from the Apollo 11 mission, searching for signs of life. Today, Ames continues to drive innovation in areas such as astrobiology, small satellites, robotic lunar exploration, and the search for habitable planets. It also develops advanced thermal protection systems and tools for safer air traffic management. Although direct public tours of the research facilities are not generally available, the NASA Gift Shop offers a chance to acquire unique NASA-themed merchandise. To delve deeper into the history of Moffett Field and NASA Ames, visitors can explore the Moffett Field Historical Society Museum, located near Hangar One. While the NASA Ames Exploration Center is currently closed, the NASA Ames Visitor Center is located at the Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland, California.
