The Venice Canals offer a tranquil escape from the vibrant chaos of Venice Beach. Developed in 1905 by Abbot Kinney as part of his "Venice of America" plan, the canals were intended to recreate the atmosphere of Venice, Italy, in Southern California. Kinney envisioned a resort destination with lavish hotels, restaurants and sixteen miles of canals.Today, only six canals remain, a fraction of the original network. These canals are bordered by charming houses, each with its unique architectural style and landscaping. Walkways line the canals, providing pedestrian access and a peaceful setting for strolling and admiring the scenery. The canals are spanned by arched bridges, adding to the area's picturesque charm. The Venice Canals have undergone renovations, including a major restoration in 1992, which helped preserve their idyllic environment. The Venice Canal Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. A visit to the Venice Canals offers a unique glimpse into the history of Venice, California, and a serene retreat from the energetic atmosphere of Venice Beach.
