Discover more about Pershing Square

Pershing Square, located in the heart of the Presidio National Park in San Francisco, is more than just a picturesque open space; it's a memorial and a tangible link to the area's rich and layered past. Situated on the Main Post, this unassuming square carries a weight of history, from its origins as part of the Spanish El Presidio de San Francisco to its dedication as a tribute to a military family touched by tragedy. The square's namesake, General John J. Pershing, was a prominent figure in American military history. In 1915, while Pershing was stationed on the Mexican border, a fire tragically engulfed his family's quarters on this very site, claiming the lives of his wife, Frances, and three of their four children. The Army chose not to rebuild the house, and the area was dedicated as Pershing Square, a lasting memorial to the Pershing family. Today, a flagpole stands at the center of Pershing Square, marking the former location of the Pershing residence. Adding to the historical tapestry of Pershing Square are two bronze cannons, cast in Lima, Peru, in the 17th century. These cannons, named El Birgen de Barbaneda, are among the oldest pieces of artillery in North America. Originally mounted at Castillo de San Joaquin, a Spanish fort built to guard the Golden Gate, they now stand as silent witnesses to the Presidio's evolution from a Spanish outpost to a U.S. Army post and, ultimately, a national park. Just east of Pershing Square lies the site of the original Spanish Presidio, founded in 1776. A boulder near the sidewalk marks the northwest corner of the original fort, offering a glimpse into the Presidio's earliest days. Pershing Square offers a tranquil setting for relaxation and recreation. Picnic tables dot the perimeter, providing a perfect setting for a leisurely lunch with views overlooking the Main Parade Lawn and towards San Francisco Bay.
